Brand round 5, mark exploration, second round, 23 October 2026

Eight marks with an idea behind them

The first sheet was judged partly nice and partly flat in its logic. These eight each start from one stated idea about what One L1fe does, and each has to be recognised on second sight. Every mark is one SVG on a 64 unit canvas, no gradients, filters or text; the 1 comes from the outline in assets/mark.svg. Each direction has an exact drawing and one variant with a stronger proportion.

Same tile rulesRounded tile at 22.4 percent radius, mark in white on green. Where a mark uses two tones, the second is white at 70 percent.
Real sizes180, 60, 32 and 16 CSS px, drawn by the browser from the vector at that size.
Two groundsStone and night. On night the green is #7CC4B1 and the ink is the stone-coloured night ink.

The directions

For each: the idea, the line you say on second sight, the mark on both grounds, the app icon tile, one colour, and the lockup.

1

Gathering

Five sources become one stem

Five thin green strokes enter from the left edge at five heights, ease into one band and run flush into the stem of the serif 1 (flag, stem and foot from the outline in assets/mark.svg, stem widened to 11 units so it reads as the bold stroke). File: 01-gathering.svg.

The ideaMany sources become one.

Second sightWhat you say when you see it again: “The lines that become a 1.”

Gathering, variant

The strokes themselves turn the corner

Variant: the five strokes are 2.4 units thick, run concentric elbows and become the stem as a flush bundle, so the stem is made of the five sources and no separate 1 is pasted on. The flag is dropped; the elbow is the flag. Foot from the font. File: 01-gathering-b.svg.

The ideaThe stem is the five strokes, side by side.

Second sightWhat you say when you see it again: “The bundle that bends into a 1.”

The person in the 1

The 1 is you

The serif 1 at 52 units tall with a standing figure (head circle, shoulders, torso, legs together, 35 units, 68 percent of the stem) cut out of the stem. The font stem is too thin to hold a body, so it is widened to 13 units; flag and foot are the font’s. File: 02-person-in-the-1.svg.

The ideaThe 1 is you.

The person in the 1, variant

A broader stem and a larger figure

Variant: stem widened to 17 units and the figure enlarged to 40 units (77 percent), so it survives to 32 px. The 1 gets heavier and loses some of its serif character. File: 02-person-in-the-1-b.svg.

The ideaThe 1 is you, and the figure is the main event.

One life, one line

One 3 unit line, no lifts: it rises from a shoulder, loops once round the head, runs over the other shoulder and drops straight as the stem, then turns into the foot (out to one side, back across the stem and out to the other). File: 03-one-line.svg.

The seam

The 1 is where things come together

A disc of two halves, ink and green, that do not meet. The channel between them is the outline of a thin serif 1, scaled so the stem runs through the whole disc. Flag and foot lie mostly outside the disc, so the flag shows only as a small notch top left. File: 04-seam.svg.

Twin counter

You and your Digital Twin, with the person in between

Two pillars, left ink and right green, each the stem of a serif 1 with the flag and the outer half of the foot from the font, flags facing outward. Stems 14.4 units, gap 7.2 (2:1:2 at the torso). The inner edges are the outline of a front-facing standing figure, so the person is the space between. Above the head and below the feet the gap closes to a 1 unit slit so the pillars stay two. The tests

Judged by the build session from the renders above at their real size. No recommendation here.

DirectionReads at 16 px (yes, partly, no)Drawn from memory (easy, hard)Could be mistaken for
1, GatheringPartly. The five strokes blur to one grey band; the bold 1 holds.Easy. Five lines, one 1.A 1 with speed lines; a comb.
1B, Gathering, variantPartly. The bundle and elbow read as one stroke; no flag.Easy.A hook; the letter n.
2, The person in the 1Partly. The figure shrinks to a notch in the stem.Easy. A 1, a person in it.The letter i; a tombstone or door.
2B, The person in the 1, variantPartly. Notch is clearer, 1 is heavier.Easy.The letter i; a keyhole.
3, One linePartly. Loop and foot hold; the shoulders thin out.Hard. Loop, curves and foot must be right.A desk lamp; a hook; a coat stand.
3B, One line, variantPartly. Thicker line keeps the loop open.Hard.A desk lamp; a hook.
4, The seamPartly. A split disc with a slit; the 1 is not visible.Easy. Two halves, a slit.A pause or split icon; a ball with a seam.
4B, The seam, variantYes as a split disc, partly as a 1.Easy.A two-tone ball; a book spine.
5, The foldYes. A pennant-shaped 1.Easy. A bar and a triangle.A flag; a bookmark.
5B, The fold, variantYes. Two folds read as a sheet.Easy.A ribbon; a sans 1.
6, KnotNo. The twist merges into a smudge.Hard. The crossings must be right.A DNA strand; a cocktail glass; an awareness ribbon.
6B, Knot, variantPartly. Crossings stay open.Hard.A DNA strand; a glass.
7, Twin counterPartly. Two heavy pillars with a slit; the figure is a sliver.Easy as an idea, hard as drawing.Roman numeral II; two H or pillars.
7B, Twin counter, variantPartly. The figure is visible as a notch.Same.Roman numeral II; a temple.
8, BraidPartly. A Y standing on a foot; the plait is gone.Hard. Three bands, one crossing.A goblet; a tuning fork; a funnel.
8B, Braid, variantPartly. A bolder Y on a foot.Hard.A goblet; a funnel.

Method: looked at the renders on this page at 1x in one headless Chromium. Not verified: a hinted 16 px bitmap, a real phone screen, anyone but the build session. Nobody drew these from memory; that column is a judgement of how many parts there are and how exact they must be.

Director's reading, 23 October, evening

DirectionCallWhy
1B, Gathering (the strokes turn the corner)Recommended family headFive strokes bend and become the stem of the 1: the product's one sentence drawn in one gesture, and a silhouette nobody else has. Reads as a 1 at 32, as a brush-stroke 1 at 16. Second sight: "the lines that become a 1". In colour the five strokes can carry the five source colours on the website and stay green everywhere else.
7B, Twin counterShortlistTwo 1s, you and your Twin, with the person as the space between them. The deepest idea on the sheet. Risk: reads as a Roman II at small sizes; needs the figure heavier to survive 32.
5, The foldShortlist, app-icon fallbackThe boldest 1 at 16 px and a clean tile. The "folded sheet" logic is thin, but the pennant 1 is ownable and instantly a 1.
2B, the person in the 1ClosedThe cut-out figure reads as a pictogram sign; the 1 loses its serif voice.
3, one lineClosedA desk lamp.
4, the seamClosedA split disc; the 1 of light is invisible below 60.
6, knotClosedA smudge at 16, a wine glass at 32.
8, braidClosedA tie or a ribbon, not a 1.

Panel, two fresh raters (synthetic, renders only)

RaterHead or favouriteSays the ideaRememberedMistaken for
Identity designer (Sonnet)1, Gathering (shortlist 1, 1B, 5B)1: separate data flowing into one1: "the lines that run into a 1"4: a dark-mode toggle; 2: a restroom figure; 6: a corkscrew; 7: a pause bar
Health-app user, not a designer (Haiku)7, Twin counter (would tap 2B)1: many sources becoming one is obvious7: two pillars with a person between5B and 4B look like loose fragments; thin lines of 3 and 1B mush at 16

Reading: both raters say "Gathering" carries the idea best, and the designer makes it the head; the user remembers "Twin counter" and would tap "the person in the 1". So the shortlist for the owners is Gathering (1 or 1B: the strokes need to be heavier at 16 px) as the family head, Twin counter (7B) as the deeper idea to keep developing, and the fold as the app-icon fallback. The agreement with the director is stronger than in the first round, which suggests the second round found the right ground: the mark draws what the product does.
